Touch Controls That Actually Feel Good
A great game can be sunk by bad controls on a phone. We test control schemes as seriously as level design, because a slippery input turns a fair game into a frustrating one.
Racers are the biggest offenders. Tilt steering looks intuitive but it's murder on a bus, and Neon Drift Circuit only clicked for us once we switched to two-button steering. The best games ship both and let you choose.
For strategy games, the winner is usually a system that lets you plan without fumbling — pinch to zoom, clear tap targets, and an undo for accidental placements. Ironroot Bastion nails this.
Our rule of thumb: if you're fighting the controls after twenty minutes, it's the game's fault, not yours. Good developers know this.
